As most know, it was hot in those Quonset huts, especially when there was a boring lecture. We were told that if we get sleepy, go to the back of the room and stand there. As not being sure of what kind of grief would await at the back of the room, fought to stay awake. Eyes closed for a second and when they open, the D.I. was pointing at me, then the back of the room. I was standing at the back of the room, but not grief was forthcoming then and later. One recruit did receive a karate chop to the stomach, but don't know why.
Was standing in formation, waiting to enter the chow line. Private late-for-chow came running up to the D.I.s standing there and requested permission to speak, then permission to join a chow line. One. D.I. asked the recruit's platoon. Number ###, replied the private. The D.I. Responded, thats my platoon and you are not in my platoon. What is your name?. Private just-got-back-from-AWOL was the reply. The D.I.s agreed that the private was not joining their chow line and for him to go somewhere else. Don't know if he ever got to eat.
Another time was in the chow hall eating, one recruit has dribble milk across the floor to his table. D.I. to him that the private was going to clean it up, so get down and do a low crawl from the beginning of the spill to the end.
