It was when I was there in 61 & 62. The beer of choice then was Rolling Rock in those little pony cans that were 6 or 7 OZ.

Cpl Miller

it was Colt 45 malt during High School. Once in the Corps as a young pvt I was directed by some old salts to get with it, and out of the beer habit. This is why I mentioned Slow Gin, it was sweet but the hang over was a killer.

I remember the first time we hit B St. on Okinawa with a couple of Marines that had been on the rock for a year or so. They took us young recruits under their wing and proceeded to get us messed up on drinks and the OTHER fun stuff. At 17, and with no experience in this area I just followed the plan set by the old salts. I could never party that hard today. ha ha

When I was in HS it was Oly and little stubby cans of County Club Malt a six pack would get three of us going pretty good.

I remember when dat came out! It was after I got out of the Corps. As far as the pony Rolling Rocks go, at the time they were popular at Lejeune in the late 50's and early 60's, it was one of the strongest beers you could get.

We had a Buck Sergeant in 2nd 8" Howitzer (SP). He orginally joined the Corps in WWII and was a Raider. After the war, he got out. When the Korean War started, he went back in and saw combat there also. He got out again but decided, after a few years, he didn't like civilian life. So, he went back into the Corps and said he would stay in the Corps until they forced him out.

Sergeant Ski was one of the nicest Marines I ever met. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. But each night, he would go back to the wall locker walled off section of the squad bay and hit a Karate board about 200 times with each fist and do about 100 situps and push ups! He never went on liberty except to go to the enlisted slopchute each Saturday night. He would order those Rolling Rocks in pony cans but wouldn't let the barkeep take the empty cans off of the bar. He would stack up the cans and when he had a full case stacked up on the bar, he would go back to the barracks. Nobody in their right mind ever did anything that might bring out his "Dark Side"!

No Prob!

It begs the question tho: Do squadbays still exist? I know a young DD in my old unit 3/8 and they have dorm style rooms now.

JITB
05-30-2008, 06:51 AM
But, mostly at training facilities. Of course, recruits live in squadbays but they are a lot nicer than the squadbays I lived in when I did my stay at Parris Island. Hell, today's recruits have airconditioning, washing machines and all sorts of comfort things! Rumor has it that DI's even come around to each rack and tuck in the recruits when they go beddy-by!

Cpl Miller

squadbays were all we had. Racks separated by wall lockers. Two Marines per cube, with two wall lockers per cube. At the end of each squadbay were a line of wall lockers that went across the squadbay, the only openning was in the cent of the room. This was the NCO area.

When we first landed on Okinawa in 65 the one thing I couldn't beleive was the fact we had a mess hall on the lower deck of the building, each building had it's own mess hall. Go figure, this (Camp Sukeran) was an Army base.

When I was in, I always lived in a squadbay. Every squadbay I lived in had the traditional rack set up of double racks with about a 3-4 foot space between your rack and the next one. Wall-lockers were set up next to each other down the center of the barracks. The only sleeping areas partitioned off by wall-lockers was the sleeping areas for the Sergeants.

Well in my four years 1959 -1963 the only squad bays I had was in boot camp and when I was at Camp LeJeune for six months. I was in quanson huts or tents or on a troop ship the rest of my time . No fans or air condition then. You felt really priviledged if you had a window by your rack. Now that was real air condition.

My first experience was at P.I. where we were in the "new" barracks which were two or three stories and brick and concrete. Each level was meant to house a platoon. Went on to ITR at Camp Geiger and old Quonset Huts of Corrugated steel. After that, it was on to NAS Memphis for A school. There we lived in Luxury. Four man rooms with enough room for each man to have some privacy.

When I first checked in to Cherry Point I lived in a squad Bay. After becoming "Permanent Personnel" I again got to share a room with several other Marines.

The last barracks I lived in was Building 210 which housed Marines from Group Supply.

My last housing was at MEMQ #5 Morehead Ct., Ft. Macon. (off base) Out the main gate and take an immediate left.My wife and I lived in a three bedroom duplex. It was actually pretty nice. No A.C. tho'. That's my housing history, USMC style. Oh yeah, I skipped one.
I also lived at 694A Franklin Rd. MEMQ on base housing.

When I got to Parris Island, we actually stayed overnight in a squadbay at Recruit Receiving. The next day, we went to the white, wood barracks of 1st Battalion. I only stayed there a month before I had to spend two weeks in the hospital. That made it necessary to set me back. I was transferred to the 3rd Battalion and spent my remaining days on Parris Island in a 16 man Quonset hut. Because our normal lodging was Quonset huts, our platoon had first choice at taking a squadbay in one of the few barracks at the rifle range when we went there. But our SDI felt he didn't want to see us spoiled so we ended up in Quonset huts at the rifle range also.

I was in a barracks squadbay at ITR. When I reported into Marine Barracks Norfolk, the barracks was all squadbays for anyone under the rank of Sergeant. At Armed Forces Staff College, we stayed in a two squadbay barracks with Navy in one squadbay and the Marine security detachment in the other.

Back at Camp Lejeune, I was in a brick barracks while in 2nd 8" Howitzer Battery (SP). I went on a Med Cruise but I would have to say our quarters aboard the USS Traverse County was more like a squadbay 1/3rd the size of any land squadbay with that many men that I saw. The last couple of months in the Corps was the only time I wasn't in a squadbay. I was at Main Gate Camp Lejeune and we stayed in a house near the gate.

Are you saying that Jack Daniels is a Bourbon ? A Tenn. Whiskey . (Although I mostly drink Jack Daniels, I sometimes do other bourbons.) For the record for anyone that doesn't know . Bourbon is made only in Kentucky.

JITB

Although most package stores and bars place Jack Daniels in the "Bourbon" section, it is really a sour mash whiskey which is different than a bourbon whiskey.

had a drink of hard liquor since 1975, when I was given a choice that it was either the drinking or the marriage, I am still married. We made a deal I would give up the hard stuff but keep the beer, and it has worked. Can't remember the last time I had a hangover, but when I did drink it was IW Harper and Wild Turkey. Now its Coors Light ice cold, won't drink any warm beer, and it has to be long necks, no cans. :D
