October 18, 1948 - March 15, 2003

HATFIELD, Wis. - Merlin RedCloud Jr., 54, of Hatfield, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, in his home.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at 12 noon, from the RedCloud residence, W8340 Palm Rd., Hatfield, and burial was in the RedCloud Cemetery.

Merlin was born on Oct. 18, 1948, in Wisconsin Rapids, to Merlin RedCloud Sr. and Lorraine Maxine White. He was raised by his grandmother, Angeline Whitewood, in the Nekoosa area. He also lived in Black River Falls, Wisconsin Dells and Wisconsin Rapids. Merlin married Jan Cleo Hill on Dec. 19, 1998 at Hatfield. The couple first lived in Tomah for several years and, for the past six years, have lived near Hatfield. Merlin was a past Tribal Chairman of the Ho-Chunk Nation. He had been employed as an AODA counselor and the transportation director for the Ho-Chunk Nation. He also had been employed as a welder at PreWay of Wisconsin Rapids. More recently, he was employed by the Ho-Chunk Preservation and served as a university consultant on Indian archeology. He had received several archeological awards from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Merlin was a member of the Ho-Chunk Medicine Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Jan; a daughter, Kimberly (Jose-Luis) Ramirez of Black River Falls; two step-daughters, Melissa Hill of Milwaukee and Violet Hill of Junction City, Kan.; a step-son, Charles Rex Terrio IV of Bowler, Wis.; four grandchildren, Deanna and Jose-Luis Ramirez, Monique Dream Terrio and Janessa Marie Sutton; three sisters, Willa RedCloud of Dells Dam, Sharon Decorah of Madison and Mary Houghton of Wisconsin Dells; five brothers, Marlin RedCloud of Hatfield, Richard Decorah and Jones Decorah, both of Madison, Willie (Crystal) Young of Neillsville, and Edward Gutchie Cloud (Roxanne) of Tomah; a special friend, Sharon Harrison of Black River Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. Merlin was preceded in death by his parents, Merlin RedCloud Sr. and Lorraine Maxine White; his step-father, Raleigh Decorah; two grandmothers, Angeline Whitewood and Nellie RedCloud; two brothers, Mitchell John RedCloud Sr. and Randall RedCloud; and uncles, Marine Corporal Mitchell RedCloud Jr. and Charles White.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at noon from the Merlin Jr. and Jan RedCloud residence. Presiding elders were James Funmaker, Clayton Winneshiek and Dennis Funmaker. Casketbearers were Delbert Cleveland, Mike Hoffman, Bruce Decorah, Maynard Rave Jr., Robert Mann and Conroy Greendeer. Continuous visitation started at 6 p.m. on Monday and continued until services on Tuesday at the Merlin Jr. and Jan RedCloud residence. The Buswell Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
