MSgt Frank John Ruvolo USMC (ret), 89, Santa Ana, CA

Frank John Ruvolo, was born May 8, 1918 in Brooklyn New York to Joseph and Jennie Ruvolo. Frank had eight brothers and one sister in his large Italian American family. Due to the great depression, Frank left school in the eighth grade and went to work to help support his family. He took odd jobs and worked for the federal government in the WPA. It was common of young men at that time to forgo their education and help the family economically. Frank joined the Marine Corps the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 8, 1941 and served in the Pacific Theater. He was followed by 5 of his brothers who served in the Army, Navy and Mairne Corps. In the window of Joseph's home hung a flag with 6 stars that told the neighborhood he had 6 boys in the service. They all returned home at the end of the war. After the war Frank decided to make the Marine Corps his home. He returned to Brooklyn and married his sweetheart, Iva Costello on April 6, 1946. Together they had four boys and two girls. Frank Jr., Dennis, Richard, Linda, Laura, and Scott. They spent the next 19 years traveling around to country wherever Frank was stationed. Frank was stationed in Quantico, Virginia, El Toro Marine Base, Santa Ana, California, Cherry Point, North Carolina and Kaneohe, Oahu Hawaii. Frank had barley started his family when in 1950 the Korean War broke. Frank was off to Kimpo airfield in Korea. He left behind his wife and three sons, one of which was newborn, to serve his country in conflict once again. He served in Korea along with his brother, Larry who was in the Army. When he returned home in 1951 he learned that his younger brother, Larry was killed in the spring offensive while serving with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team. Frank retired from the Marine Corps in 1965 with the rank of Master Sergeant. He bought a modest home and made Santa Ana, California his final destination. He went to work for McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft Company and retired in 1978. Frank enjoyed his retirement years. In February 1991, Iva his wife of 45 years died in her sleep. At Harvest Crusade in 1991, Frank went forward during the altar call and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ into his life. Frank continued on until April 2007 when he was felled by a stroke. Frank died on December 12, 2007 due to complications from his stroke. Frank leaves behind all 6 children; 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Frank was a good husband, father and a proud Marine. He loved his country very much. The Ruvolo family acknowledges that Frank has been reunited with Iva, the love of his life, and awaits us all in eternity with his Lord and Savior, Jesus who is called the Christ. Funeral at Fairhaven's Waverley Chapel on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 12 p.m. Fairhaven Memorial Park
