Kent "Deacon" Elliott 82, Nevada

Kent "Deacon" Elliott, 82, passed away August 9, 2018. He was born February 25, 1936, to the late Lura Skinner Elliott and Marion Elliott, in Golden, Colorado. Kent graduated from Boulder high School in 1954. He enlisted in the U.S. Marion Corps in November 1954 and served his country for three years and played on the Marine basketball team. Kent was a gifted athlete and was signed as a AAA pitcher with the Knoxville, Tennessee Baseball Club in 1957, the Gainesville, Florida G-Men in 1958, and the Keokuk Iowa Baseball Club in 1959, farm teams for the St. Louis Cardinals. He had a tremendous fastball but had a hard time controlling it. Kent went on to become a police officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in 1965 and proudly served over 25 years on the force. The Deacon was a larger than life figure at six foot four inches and 250 pounds. He was boisterous, funny a big story teller and enjoyed a good drink. Deacon got his nickname from his frequent "preaching" to his fellow cops and bar mates. He pursued his interests passionately, playing racquetball in many police Olympics, fishing, skiing and tennis. Kent was shot in the line of duty and the bullet severely injured his left hand, he joked they didn't get his racquetball hand! Kent suffered a stroke in his late 60's which limited his ability to speak but did not diminish his spirit. Kent is survived by his only child, Christi Elliott of Gardnerville. He taught her to ski at the age of three and they spent her childhood traveling to ski resorts all over the western US in his old VW bug. Kent was an animal lover and rescued many dogs throughout his life. He had a soft for those down on their luck, both canine and human. Kent's beloved wife, of 51 years, Arlene, passed away May 28, 2018. Her loss was too much to bear. Christi is hosting an open house/memorial at Kent's home from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, August 26. Please contact Christi at (775) 671-0909 for address and gate code. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Kent's name to:
