Edward M. Ward, 87, Ocean City, NJ

Edward M. Ward, 87 - of Ocean City, died Tuesday, August 22, 2006. He was born in Germantown, PA, the son of Raymond and Adelaide d'Invilliers Ward. He attended LaSalle High School Class of 1936 and attended LaSalle College. In 1938, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and attended the "Platoon Leader's Class" in Quantico, VA where he qualified for a Reserve 2nd Lieutenant Commission in the USMCR. In 1940, he transferred to the U.S. Navy as a Naval Aviation Cadet. After graduating from Flight School in Pensacola, FL in June 1941, he was designated Naval Aviator No. 7740 and commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets during World War II, flying PBY seaplanes and PB4Y 4 engine patrol bombers. In 1945, he transferred to the Regular Navy. He retired from active duty July 1970 after 30 years active duty. Commander Ward specialized in Arctic and Antarctic exploration having participated in four Arctic Operations, 1946-52 and "Deepfreeze" 1 & 2, 1955-1956 in the Antarctic. His first experience in the Arctic came in 1946 when he conducted an aerial magnetometer survey of Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in Alaska. This took in an area from Brooks Range north to the Atlantic Ocean, west to the Bearing Sea and east to the Canadian Border. The survey succeeded in finding areas of potential oil reserves, among these was Prudhoe Bay, the largest oil field in Alaska. His last Arctic expedition was "Project Ski-Jump." Flying a ski equipped R4d (DC-3), he established eighteen oceanographic stations between Pt. Barrow and the North Pole. This gained him the distinction of being the first U.S. military pilot to make successful landing on the unprepared surface of the polar ice cap. He commanded Air Utility Squadron Four, 1957-1958. In 1959, he had command of the Naval Air Technical Training Unit in Lakehurst. He served as Executive Officer and later Commanding Officer aboard the USS Albemarle AV-5, 1959-60. In 1960-62, he was Executive Officer & later Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Station in Minneapolis, MN. Prior to his retirement, he served as Executive and Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Technical Services Facility in Philadelphia, PA. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marilyn; his children, Edward M. Jr. of Winchester, VA, Joanne Schaut of Ocean City, John d'I of Petersburg, MaryLee Janto of Ocean City & Suzanne Walder of Baltimore, MD; seven grandchildren; five great grand children; and a brother James Ward of Claymont, DE. He was predeceased by his sister Adelaide Meehan. Commander Ward was a member of the New York Explorers Club, the American Polar Society, Association of Naval Aviation, Order of Daedalians, the Retired Officers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and a Charter Member of the National Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, FL. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday morning at 11 o'clock from Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church 40th Street at Asbury Avenue, Ocean City where friends may call from 10 o'clock until the time of Mass. Burial will follow Mass in Seaside Cemetery, Palermo.
