Chrome Domes

Any of you Marines remember "Chrome Domes" (silver painted helmet liners)?

Back in the day (1959), they were "de rigueur" for recruits passing through Parris Island. We wore them in the summer months as protection from that hot South Carolina sun. As fall approached, I seem to remember we switched to Utility soft covers.

Did "Hollywood" Marines wear these?

The "Chrome Domes" issue came up when a buddy of mine spotted a U.S. Marine Pith Helmet "from the 60's" on sale on e-bay. From the 60's? I don't remember Marine Pith Helmets when I was in ('59-'65).

No 'Chrome' at SD. I was on the field there 58-60. Pith Helmets were worn at PI in '46. They were terrible. The wind would create a whistle that made it difficult to hear the DI. Not a happy situation to miss a command in COD on the sand pit.

We had them when I went through in Apr-Jun 1981 at PI. The old steel bucket liner spray painted silver.

Entered P.I. Jan 29, 1959 and graduated April 24, 1959...Guess we were lucky, as to the weather, because I don't remember wearing them...Just the covers with all the stickers on them...Whoa herd????

I think PI went to Chrome Domes in late April or Early May. My first encounter at PI with them was My FIRST Afternoon there, along with 3 or 4 other PVTs, was spent replacing the sweat bands in several hundred Chrome Domes. There were either 6 or 7 clips that had to be opened on the old band and the same number that needed to be opended and closed to install the new ones. talk about sore Thumbs......

Went through PI (Platoon 338) in summer of 1961. As I remember the switch from chrome dome to soft cover (pulled down over your ears!) was at a certain phase of training. At another point in training you were allowed to wear the cover correctly ( I think it was after the Rifle Range.) It differentiated between platoons at different stages of training. We went through the transition completely in the summer(July to September) so weather wasn't the driving factor, at least at that time.

We had a Chrome Dome PLT when I was going through Boot in 1977..
They were a Punishment PLT as we were not allowed any contact with them
in the chow hall. They were a rowdy bunch as I remember..

Talking Chrome Domes

I recall them rather 'fondly'...

And, the impact of such on the top of my grape by a DI/Classroom Instructor if you weren't completely focused in class...

The sound is like that of knuckles thumping a ripe melon...
