Smile Finally figured out the correct response....

While chatting with a fellow Marine a while ago, our conversation was interrupted by another gent. This other gent mentioned that back in his day they had a name for Marines like me. I replied, "Oh?" And the response I got was BAM. So I said that must mean Beautiful American Marine! No, was the response I received.

I've been thinking on this for some time now. And finally figured out the correct response for being referred to as a BAM....... it kinda goes like this,

"Well, after 30+ years, I still fit my boot camp issue Alphas. Do you??"

and then wait to see if they can figure out who the BAM really is ....

Wink Nancy...

Nancy...

My first wife was a Woman Marine...
We met in '72 when the both of us were in Quantico...she was at TMO, and I was at the Air Station...
She highly objected to the name you posted as well as a couple of others that were the norm...and she wasn't afraid of stating such...

But, she didn't have a problem calling me "MY HAM"

Ah, BAM is a term of endearment. Although I never used it, it's really not that bad a term. Better than the term "split tail" which the navy uses, lol. I/we always just referred to y'all as WM's. Is that offensive as well?

I remember in drill at PI our DI had a cadence that went something like 'There goes a rabbit , BAM, BAM I got-er. I never knew what it was about until one day I noticed we where close to the WM's and I thought what a crock some of them I wouldn't mind taking home to meet mama.

danno...

WM is just fine.

Although one day when talking with my niece, I discovered the abbreviation can be a bit "confusing." Seems the text messaging generation uses WM to refer to "white male"....

Well, in my day we called them 'WMs'. Back then the women were a separate organization within the Corps. They had their own Director of Women Marines. A female Colonel. That was eliminated, in the 70s I believe, and they became fully integrated into the Corps. The term 'BAM' was not generally used in their presence, but it was used as a term of derision when referring to deserving individuals. Of course, there were so few that most males never saw or served with a WM. I did and even dated some at a couple of duty stations.
