LtCol Robert "Lefty" Manley Fraser Jr. USMC (ret), 84, Bandon, OR

Oct. 28, 1923 - Feb. 5, 2008

A memorial service will be held at a later date for U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Robert Manley Fraser Jr., retired, 84, of Bandon. Cremation rites were under the direction of Nelson's Bay Area Mortuary.

Robert "Lefty" Manley Fraser Jr. was born Oct. 28,1923, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Robert and Ruth (Sherman) Fraser. He died Feb. 5, 2008, in Coos Bay.

He left college after the attack on Pearl Harbor and enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an aviation cadet on May 30, 1942. He was commissioned as second lieutenant and naval aviator on Aug. 16, 1943. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, retiring on July 1,1970. He flew 8,500 hours in a variety of aircraft including the R4D transport to the F8, F9 and A4 jet aircraft.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice (Niemann) Fraser of Bandon; daughter, Susan Fraser of Santa Fe, N.M.; daughter, Dr. Gail Champog and husband Robert of Doha, Qatar; son, James Fraser and wife, Isabel Glasgow of El Paso, Texas; son, Dave Fraser and wife, Dr. Eleanor Lo of Davis, Calif.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandsons; sister, Betty and Bob Stout of California; sister, Martha and Keith Couch of Kansas; and sister, Carolyn Hoodmaker of Colorado.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Bandon Historical Society, 270 Filmore St., Bandon, OR 97411; or Boy Scouts of America, Oregon Trail Council, 2525 Centennial Blvd., Eugene, OR 97401.

Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson's Bay Area Mortuary, 267-4216.
