CWO2 Earl G. Schmidt USMC (ret), 91, Vista, CA

VISTA - Earl G. Schmidt, 91, passed away at his home on Saturday, September 6, 2008. He was born on December 17, 1916 in Oak Creek, Wisconsin and came to California in 1938 after joining the Marine Corps. Mr. Schmidt was a 52 year resident of Vista and a Veteran of World War II and Korea. He was first stationed at Camp Elliott in San Diego and was sent to Pearl Harbor immediately after the Japanese attack. He was a skilled electrician and worked tirelessly putting the Naval base back in operating order. He was later a part of the famed Inchon Landing in Korea in 1950 and fought with the 1st Marine Division, 7th Engineers out of the Chosin Reservoir. After several additional overseas tours, he retired from the Corps in 1960 as a Chief Warrant Officer II. He then spent the next 20 years working as an electrician with Electrical Union #569 in San Diego before retiring in 1980. He and his wife, Pat, who passed away in 2004, had been very active members of St. Francis Catholic Church in Vista. Earl was also a 4th degree Knight and a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He spent many hours doing electrical work for St. Francis and also for San Luis Academy where his children received their education. He also enjoyed campaigning for his niece, Julie Nygaard, who is currently serving on the Carlsbad City Council. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Rita Schmidt Sudman and John of Sacramento, Karen Saunders of Playa Del Rey, Mary Jo Funkhouser and Don of Oceanside, Therese Brager and Steve of Chatsworth; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Schmidt and Lawanna of Redding; 3 grandchildren, Suzanne Schmidt Sudman and Cristina Schmidt both of Los Angeles and Adam Schmidt of Redding. Visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 15th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Rosary recited at 7:00 PM at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel. Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 16th at 10:00 AM at St. Francis Catholic Church in Vista with burial following at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside with Military Honors.
