Henry "Hank" Andrew Schafer Jr., 68, Fortuna, CA

Henry Andrew Schafer, Jr. (Hank)

Hank died Monday, May 25, 2009 at Redwood Memorial Hospital with his wife by his side. He suffered with lung and bone cancer.

Hank was born February 14, 1941 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Henry Andrew Schafer, Sr. and Dorothy Uhlman Schafer. He was raised and attended schools in the Pittsburgh area. Hank enjoyed the outdoors and hunted and fished as a boy.

November 4, 1963 he married "the girl next door", Carol Lee Miller. They resided in the Pittsburgh area until April 1966 when he was drafted into the Marine Corps. He was a field radio operator for 9th Comm and for 8" self-propelled guns. When he was sent to Camp Pendleton, California, Carol joined him. They were transferred to Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Ca. After his discharge, he worked aboard the 29 Palms base as a painter and later was an apprentice to a plumber. He became a journeyman plumber.

August 11, 1972 Henry Andrew Schafer, III was born in Palm Springs, California. The family became interested in Special Olympics to help their son. Hank volunteered for five years as a coach for volleyball and softball and traveled with his teams all over California. One of his volleyball teams played the United States Olympic team.

In 1990 Hank had to retire on disability because of an auto accident. During that time, he started a small engine repair business and ran that for five years until it became too much for him.

After 31 years in the desert, Hank and family decided they had enough of the desert. They traveled around and found Fortuna. In 1998 they moved here permanently. He loved Fortuna, the redwoods, and the people.

He leaves behind his wife and son.

He was very proud that while still living in the desert, he became a licensed amateur radio operator and helped with communications during a southern California earthquake.

No services are planned at this time. Arrangements under the care of Goble’s Fortuna Mortuary, Fortuna, CA.
