Robert M. Frederick, 84, Rockville, MD


Husband of Rosemary Frederick (deceased); father of Pam (Steve) and Mark (Barbara); and proud grandfather of Ryan, Sergei and Wren passed away on his birthday, Thursday, February 1, 2007 at the age of 84 from complications of a stroke.

Mr. Frederick was born in Wadsworth, Ohio on February. 1, 1923 to Golda (Jaycox) and Llewellyn Frederick and he was the youngest of three boys. During World War II, Mr. Frederick served in the Marines, taking part in several island campaigns in the South Pacific, including the invasion of Okinawa. In 1948, Mr. Frederick received a BS degree in Horticulture from Ohio State University. For a time, he assisted his father and brothers, Marvin and Ellis in running the family farm in Wadsworth.

Mr. Frederick was the Legislative representative for the National Grange in Washington, DC for over 30 years. He also served as U.S. Special Trade Representative ftom 1972 until 1986 to the Agriculture Policy Advisory Committee. A life-long advocate for family farms and rural communities, Mr. Frederick played a significant role in molding farm policies, giving key testimony before Senate and House Agriculture Communities throughout his career. Mr. Frederick was one of the first and most consistent voices for international trade agreements, such as NAFTA, that opened markets for American agriculture. Mr. Frederick received numerous honorary degrees, and in 1995, was a recipient of Ohio State University's Distinguished Alumni Award.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 4 p.m. at Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ, 5010 Little Falls Road, Arlington. VA (703) 538-4886.

Contributions can be made to either Rock Spring Congregational Church Endowment Fund or to Fisher House Foundation, 1401 Rockville Pike, Ste. 600, Rockville, MD 20852. The family would like to thank the staff at Sibley Hospital and at Ingleside at Rock Creek for kind and excellent care.
