Michael E. Turney, Master Gunnery Sergeant U.S.M.C. Ret. on Saturday, March 31, 2007. Loving husband of Peggy Turney (nee Follmer); loving father of Jillian (Thomas) Turney-Albright, Cpl. Christopher Conkel U.S.M.C. and Erica (Thomas) Carlo (step-daughter); loving grandfather of Kaitlin Albright; dear son of Mary Therrien and the late Arthur W. Turney, Jr.; our dear son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend. Mike loved the Corps, the Dodgers, the Rams, coaching and playing softball and spending time with family and friends.Services: Funeral at KUTIS SOUTH COUNTY Chapel, 5255 Lemay Ferry Rd. (Butler Hill), on Tuesday, April 3, 2:30 p.m. Interment Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana, CA. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Marine Corps League in his honor. Visitation Mon. 1-9 p.m. and Tues. 10 a.m. until time of service at 2:30.

Former All-Marine softball coach Turney dies of cancer
Stars and Stripes Pacific edition, Friday, April 6, 2007 Mike Turney, who coached the All-Marine men’s softball team to the All-Armed Forces tournament title in 1999, died Saturday of terminal brain cancer at St. Louis University Hospital in Missouri. He was 53. The retired master gunnery sergeant was best remembered in the military softball community for having coached a team including five Pacific-based Marines to the All-Armed Forces championship. He also coached the All-Armed Forces team, comprising seven players from the Pacific, six Marines and one Air Force. Turney had been diagnosed with brain cancer on March 19 and underwent surgery on March 22 at St. Louis University Hospital, according to his Web site, http://www.miketurney.com. He died at 2:33 p.m. Saturday. A funeral service was held Tuesday at the Kutis South County Chapel in St. Louis. He will be buried with full military honors Friday in his hometown of Santa Ana, Calif. Turney is survived by his wife Petty, son Chris (a Marine corporal), daughter Jillian and stepdaughter Erica.
